Morning at Lazards (06 Feb 2004)
A city council worker in his green apron is sweeping the pavement in front of the cyber cafe. He is on the Nairobi's city council's payroll, and is assigned to sweep the street at this time because the street is not yet crowded. He is tall and lean and middle-aged, and he whistles as he sweeps. The dust is terrible. He sneezes violently.
"Sorry brother," I say.
"Thank you," he replies.
I pause and stand beside the locked entrance of the Internet cafe, wondering what to say. The man stops sweeping.
"You work there?" he asks.
"No. I just want to send email. Why have they delayed to open today?"
"I don't know." He shrugs.
