Thinking About Grand Theft Auto (06 Feb 2004)
I suspect that it is GTA's very over-the-top social depravity that makes it so popular. This game is not a subtle entreaty to our baser instincts. It is a full frontal assault on decency, and as such it is perfectly tuned to the transgressive instincts of every red-blooded teenager — and remember it is teenagers, not little children, who are buying this game. This is a game that screams, "be bad," but does it with plenty of tongue-in-cheek. Grand Theft Auto is more Mad Magazine than Soldier of Fortune. It's the video game equivalent of a dead baby joke.
