The most significant contribution to New Media theory in 2003 is a novel, William Gibson's Pattern Recognition. The academy has lately seemed timid and opaque, but Gibson's novel is brisk, accessible, and adventurous. And, in the course of making an argument that he is not merely a science-fiction writer, Gibson perfectly captures the nuances and brilliantly imagines a future of the art on the net.
