Changing Web Layouts On-the-Fly (08 Jul 2004)
David Salesin in the Document Processing and Understanding group at Microsoft Research has developed a way to adapt a print publication look to an online presence. His method uses a set of grid-based templates that can adapt to a range of page sizes and other viewing conditions. The templates include various layout elements, such as figures, text, and images.
Their research prototype, which is XML based, includes a layout engine for formatting the page, a paginator that determines the optimal allocation of content and optimal pairing of templates with content, and a user interface that makes it easy to create the adaptive templates.
