Burn Up the Road (13 Jul 2004)
The goal of their project was to develop a fighter that starts at a level of ignorance comparable to a human beginner who had just started playing against the computer AI or another human. A human would naturally develop fighting skills as they continued to play, and receive rewards or punishments for their actions.
In their experiments they fed a motivation into the character. For example, the character would get a reward when the health of his opponent went down and no reward would be given when his own health went down. As could be expected, at first the character didn't do so well. However, after about 15 minutes of play, he learned to attack very aggressively and fared much better. He avoided actions that didn't lead to success.
