Breaking From the Crowd: A Compact News Homepage (30 Jul 2004)
Among the innovations Jacobson has designed into Observer-Reporter.com: Better, smarter, larger use of photos; a "Breaking News" page for use with big stories; and smarter use of ads, with fewer on a page and use of larger-footprint ads positioned to ensure (he hopes) that they're seen, not ignored. Another innovation is the use on the homepage of the same typeface used by the print newspaper -- a contemporary cut of Bodoni instead of the web-customary Times, Georgia, Verdana, Arial, et al.
What do you think? Is this an improvement over the news-industry web norm, or not? Could this design concept work for a larger news institution?
