The question to pose, as designers of technology, is whether there are ways to isolate the good from the bad when we design products. Could we define benevolent surveillance and only allow for those modes of operation? Could we simultaneously outlaw bad surveillance and really enforce it? Or should we just allow the technology to evolve and adapt our own notions of public/private infospace as needed.
