(08 Dec 2005) One of the main reasons for the dramatic change in direction in HCI is the reaction to the array of new challenges confronting the field. The rapid pace of technological developments in the last few years (e.g., the internet, wireless technologies, handheld computers, wearables, pervasive technologies, tracking devices) has created many opportunities for augmenting, extending and supporting user experiences, interactions and communications. These opportunities include designing experiences for all manner of individuals (and not just users) in all manner of settings doing all manner of things. The home, the creche, the outdoors, public places and even the human body are now being experimented with as potential places in which to embed computational devices.
